TIB Terminology Service – Terminologies and Ontologies Support FAIR Research Data Management

In order to support the scientific use of established ontologies and terminologies, a Terminology Service was set-up by TIB in cooperation with the NFDI initiative: https://terminology.tib.eu/.

The TIB Terminology Service provides a single point of access to terminologies from a range of domains such as architecture, chemistry, computer science, mathematics and physics. The use of terminologies can empower scientists to realise a machine-processable expression of the information contained in their research data and other academic outputs.

Terminologies offer the building blocks for (meta-)data schemata and data annotation by defining important concepts of a domain. Furthermore, they allow persistent reference to concepts and terms by assigning them Uniform Resource Identifiers (URIs). In consequence, this strongly supports the future use of data fostering interoperability and reuse in a FAIR data context.

A controlled terminology is a normative collection of terms whose spelling is fixed and for which additional information such as a definition, a set of synonyms, an editor, a version, and a license to specify the terms of use can be provided. An ontology is a formal representation of the knowledge of a domain beyond this, in which concepts are organized hierarchically and terms are related to each other.

100 ontologies, 1.1 million terms and over 16,000 properties

As of now, more than 100 ontologies, 1.1 million terms and over 16,000 properties are included in the TIB Terminology Service. All entries are accessible using a new, extended REST API: https://service.tib.eu/ts4tib/swagger-ui.html.

The implementation as a REACT web application significantly increases the performance, scalability and usability of the Terminology Service.

At TIB, we strongly believe that the application of terminologies to the research data lifecycle will become a corner stone for a semantic web of data, enabling effective access and machine-actionable processing of information, easy exchange of data over system barriers, as well as the automation of related processes and reuse of data.
